Good preparation makes an interior painting project smoother and helps the finished work look cleaner. Homeowners do not necessarily need to empty the entire house, but a few steps before painting begins can save time and prevent avoidable problems.

Move small items and valuables

Remove wall decor, fragile items, electronics and small furniture from the room when possible. Larger furniture can often be moved toward the center and covered, depending on the project.

Take down curtains or window treatments if they interfere with walls or trim being painted.

Identify repairs before paint day

Point out nail holes, cracks, damaged drywall, loose trim, water stains and areas where caulk has failed. Some repairs require drying or multiple coats of compound, so they are easier to plan before the final painting day.

If there is an active leak, fix the source before repairing and painting the surface.

Confirm colors and sheen

Choose colors before work begins and confirm where each color goes. Also decide on sheen: flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and other finishes behave differently and are commonly used in different areas.

If you are uncertain, test samples on the actual wall because light can change how a color appears throughout the day.

Plan for pets and access

Keep pets away from open doors, tools and wet paint. Make sure work areas are accessible and decide how painters will enter the home. If multiple rooms are involved, discuss the order so you can still use the rest of the house comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to remove all furniture before painting?

Not always. Small and fragile items should be removed, while larger furniture can sometimes be moved to the center and protected.

Should drywall repairs happen before painting?

Yes. Patching, sanding and priming should be completed before finish coats are applied.

How do I choose paint sheen?

Consider the room, desired appearance and how much cleaning the surface will need. Kitchens, baths and trim often use more washable finishes than low-traffic ceilings.

Should I wash walls before painting?

Dirty, greasy or dusty surfaces should be cleaned as part of preparation so coatings can adhere properly.
